THE FUNERAL service has taken place at Phillack Parish Church, Hayle, for Sidney Robinson Daniels, aged 90, of Lelant.
The service was conducted by Canon Martyn Trembath and Canon Tony Neal.
Sid was born at Phillack in August 1920, one of ten children. He joined the Royal Navy in 1938 and served throughout the Second World War. In 1939, after basic training, he joined his first ship, HMS Norfolk, which was involved in the search and eventual sinking of the German battleship Bismarck. Later Sid transferred to HMS Lowestoft, his job being to operate the quick firing Oerlikon gun.
After being demobbed in February 1946, Sid returned to Hayle in 1948 and started working at the power station. He was employed there until it closed in 1977. For the last few years before his retirement, Sid worked at Penzance Post Office.
In his spare time, Sid was a member of West Cornwall Golf Club, but his real passion was rugby. He was devoted to Hayle Rugby Club, first as a player, then as a committee member and loyal supporter.
Sid had two children, Helen and Michael, and was a proud grandfather of Laura, Rachel and Talan, and great-grandfather of Jake.
